Type Locality and Naming

Khodzhirbulak Mountains, Surkhan-Tau, Gissar Range. E.M. Golovin in 1941 (106, p. 10).

Synonym: Khodzhirbulakskaya Suite, Ходжирбулакская св, Hodzhirbulak suite


Lithology and Thickness

Almond-shaped spilites (incomplete thickness up to 300m), in the upper part of the goniatite limestones (thickness up to 40 m), replaced and overlain by pillow lava flows.

Lower contact

The contact with the underlying deposits is unknown

Upper contact

According to I.M. Nigmadzhanov, it is overlain by the Badavin Fm.

Regional extent

Southwestern spurs and southern slopes of the Gissar Range, southeastern slopes of the Surkhan-Tau Mountains, watershed of the Aksu-Vakhshivar rivers. F.R. Bensh considers the Khodzhirbulak Fm to be a facies and age analog of the Kairak Fm (439).

Fossils

In the limestones, conodonts and Goniatites of the Eumorphoceras zone, characteristic of the upper Serpukhovian stage. From the carbonate material filling the inter-pillow space in the lava flows, and individual lenses of limestones lying among the spilites (basaltoids) - conodonts of the Serpukhovian stage - Gnatodus bilineatus (Round.), Paragnathodus cruciformis (Clarke), P. multinodosus (Hig.) and others. At the very top of the suite, a complex of conodonts characteristic of the lower Bashkirian stage of the Middle Carboniferous - Idiognathodus sulcatus Hig., I. sinuatus Har. et Hd., Declinognathodus noduliferus KI. et Cr.


Age 

The age of the suite is determined as Serpukhovian-Bashkirian stage with a sliding upper age boundary from the base of the Middle Carboniferous to the middle of the Bashkirian stage. The Khodzhirbulak Fm is an age analog of the upper part of the Vakhshivar Fm, although it is not excluded that these suites may be coeval only partially, and the Khodzhirbulak Fm is located higher than the Vakhshivar Fm (165).
